Regine Siedentop and coauthors published "Reaction Engineering and Comparison of Electroenzymatic and Enzymatic ATP Regeneration Systems" in ChemElectroChem on electrochemical regeneration of the cofactor ATP.

ATP plays an important role in many enzymatically catalyzed reactions. Regeneration of the cofactor can lead to increased performance in cell-free reaction systems. Such an enzymatic ATP regeneration by means of an acetate kinase and pyruvate oxidase could be coupled to electrochemical methods. The use of electrochemistry brings resource-saving advantages, since electrons are transferred to electrodes instead of to additional molecules that consume them in the process. Our ATP-consuming reaction has been compared with other enzymatic regeneration systems and it shows properties and key figures that are promising for an economical bioprocess.
