The environmental impacts associated with the post-industrial age, which are largely characterized by dependence on fossil fuels, require a fundamental reassessment of the future prospects for the energy and chemical industries. Fungi represent a valuable resource for optimizing the circular economy by enabling the efficient utilization of biomass and plant waste. They harbor a large variety of oxidative enzymes, especially in the secretome. To harness the biocatalytic potential, it is necessary to analyze wild-type fungi and their secretomes. In this study, a combination of genome mining and activity screening was applied to uncover the oxidative potential of a strain collection of underutilized ascomycetes and basidiomycetes. In addition, the heme peroxidase and laccase activities of four promising fungi, Bipolaris victoriae, Colletotrichum sublineola, Neofusicoccum parvum and Moesziomyces antarcticus, were investigated to gain a deeper insight into their enzyme secretion. The results presented demonstrate the biocatalytic potential of wild-type fungi, which can be useful for the development of sustainable processes, for example.
